It starts two years into World War I, when everybody is starting to realize that their lives will never be the same again. Prompted by the show, I started telling Judah what little I know about the horrors of that war, and he was so interested I went and searched my bookshelves, because I thought we might have a kids book about WWI. We don’t. But we do have a book about the great escapes of WWII, which he is currently reading with great interest. So at least something good came of watching Downton Abbey!

Loving the Little Years by Rachel Jankovic needs little recommendation in my usual circles – I heard lots of good things about it, which is why I requested it for Christmas, which is why my sister-in-law, Abigail, gave it to me. All of the good things are true. It’s a great book, inspirational, funny and short. In the second to last chapter, I literally laughed until I cried. When Monica heard me, she came out of her room (she had been put to bed already) and seemed rather alarmed, but I was able to reassure her that no, her mommy wasn’t having a nervous breakdown, everything was fine.

The other great book I’ve read in the last month, which I actually just finished this evening, is Make the Bread, Buy the Butter by Jennifer Reese. It’s sort of a personal saga, sort of a cook book, and frequently hilarious. I like my facts mixed with humor, in case you couldn’t guess. The premise of the book is that you can make many things at home that you didn’t know you can make at home. Some of them are worth doing, in terms of economics, in terms of time, in terms of health, or in terms of quality. Some of them are not. I’m now considering attempting a few things from scratch that I had never even thought of making at home before, like peanut butter, mozzarella cheese, pancetta, and doughnuts. And I have finally given up on producing baguettes with a crisp egg shell crust. It just can’t be done at home by a baker without a super spiffy oven or lots of time on her hands. Or so says the author, and I’m taking her word for it. Her writing style rather resembles Rachel Jankovic’s. Here’s a sample:

If rather than a lush green garden, you want your outdoor space to resemble a Third World village, I suggest getting some chickens, who will methodically denude the landscape of every blade of grass, low-lying weed, and wildflower. And if you want to rid yourself of shrubbery and small trees as well, get goats. Very soon you will have the adobe patio of your dreams.

Mrs. Reese’s animal sagas were the best.

Happy January, everyone!

Thursday night I took the kids to the dress rehearsal, so they were up late that night. Friday night, after the pageant we brought two boys home to spend the night to celebrate Judah’s birthday – we didn’t send them to bed until 10:00 (come on, it was a sleepover – and a Friday night!). They woke up before 6 am. This morning we had a birthday brunch for Judah with various family and friends showing up mid-morning to lunch time. While we were waiting for our guest to arrive and I was cooking and cleaning up last night’s dinner dishes, Michael got the tires either torqued or changed on both of our vehicles.

The brunch was fun and Judah got some great gifts! I’ll post pictures later. After all our guests left, Michael had to go in to work again, though he’s getting pretty tired of the place – he got home shortly before 8:00. I cleaned up the kitchen some and made a big fruit salad for church tomorrow, then made and served dinner (short cut dinner – frozen pizza). The older boys are all tired and getting sick from all that playing, eating sweet things, watching TV, playing the Wii and running around outside, so they were happy to go to bed at 8:30-ish, after we finished Advent. The younger two, after taking two-hour naps this afternoon, seem fully charged. We put Monica to bed anyway, but of course she came out shortly thereafter needing “fresh water” with ice. I sent her to go to the bathroom since she was up anyway, but she dawdled putting her drink by her bed first and – you guessed it – wet her pants. *sigh* She is finally to bed again, but Phinehas still is full of energy and cheerfulness, and seems to be thinking: “now that the older siblings are in bed, what are we gonna do together, huh, Mom? Huh, Dad?” Now I just need to finish all of the hand-washing, and I can rest (but of course, I’m writing this blog post, first).

And I can’t figure out, why are Michael and I so tired?!

Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without Judah. He can vacuum, clean windows and mirrors, actually pick up a room (for the most part), wipe off the table, get the little kids in their car seats, and do a multitude of other chores, small and large. He is my right hand man, no doubt.

He is conscientious and tender hearted. He frequently gets started on his school before I tell him to, and pays attention to his checklists. At this point in time in his life, he would like to go into the army and earn medals like his Uncle David.

I’m looking forward to seeing where life takes him!

And I think I like the seasoning in the Libby’s pumpkin pie recipe better anyway.

Decorating! I actually did some! The stockings were all made by my mother in law – I just got mine this year. Decided it was finally time to join the rest of the family, so I requested one of my own last year.

Advent devotions! As you can see, the kids really get into the candles!! Phinehas was initially very uncomfortable with starting fires in the house, but as you can see he’s finally gotten into it.

That must be why people differentiate, rather than just saying “He’s one year old.” He wasn’t quite walking at 12 months, and now he’s running. Fast. He couldn’t really manipulate his surroundings, and now he can open drawers and cupboards, push chairs into more convenient locations for climbing, and push buttons on any electronics he can reach. He didn’t talk at all at 12 months and now he… well, he still doesn’t talk much. People theorize that with three older siblings he doesn’t much need to, but I think he’s just another like Judah. Judah didn’t talk until he was 2 years and 4 months old and then, as my parents said about me, “[he] never stopped.” Phinehas jabbers all the time and seems to think he’s talking, but his only words that we can recognize are:

“Mo” More.

“Daddy”

“Mommy” or “Mama”

“uh-oh” (usually after intentionally dropping something)

“Hhha” Hot

“Day” in a very pleasant voice, for Please

“Day-Day” in a very pleasant voice, for Thank you.

“goo” Good, when you say, “How are you, Phinehas?”

As you can see, he’s light on the ending consonants!

He loves to be involved in everything, as you can see in the photo below, taken the day before Thanksgiving when we were making pumpkin pies (from scratch!).

I say that his job description is “going around the house getting into things,” because I think that’s pretty much what he does all day! When not doing that, he routinely:

pulls out all of the dishes from the bottom cupboard in our bookshelf and climbs in

plays in the bathroom sink with bath toys, usually making a big soupy water mess. (I don’t mind, I have a bunch of old towels specifically for cleaning up messes)

hides under blankets and giggles

runs like the wind and hides behind the big chair in his room, when I’m getting his clothes out of the drawer to dress him

throws his blanket on the floor and does a face plant into it to snuggle. (He calls his blanket, “Mmmmm.”)

climbs up on anything he can

He went through a really rough patch right around Thanksgiving. He got the flu and didn’t recover from it for almost a week, and then it still seemed like something else was bothering him – he was unbelievably crabby. But whatever it was seems to be gone and now he’s Mr. Cheerful again, just like in the picture above.

Or you could follow this tip: How to Soften Butter. It works! I know, I just tried it today. I was making Salted Caramel Thumbprint Cookies for Judah’s piano recital tomorrow, and was faced with the above mentioned dilemma. Google came to my rescue, and the cookies are made (and delicious!)

Now let’s just hope that Judah doesn’t get the flu before his big moment! Of course if he did, we’d just have to eat them all ourselves….

As I sit here in my blue bathrobe (thanks Mom), and drink my thrice-blessed coffee, I’m also thankful for clear winter mornings (we even saw the sun!) and new decks, and beautiful children with big round eyes full of excitement or thoughtful pondering.

I’m thankful that the pumpkin pie I made from scratch turned out well. How do I know? Let’s just say we had a bit of a “Thanksgiving Preview” last night and ate one of the 4 pies. Yes, one whole pie. It was a small one!

I’m thankful that my hard working husband has a stable job – an extra blessing in this economy! And, though he doesn’t have a sentimental bone in his body, I’m thankful that his love is faithful and strong.

In point of fact, we were able to celebrate our 10th Anniversary twice this year, the first time with a dinner date and the second time, just the last weekend, with an overnight stay in downtown Portland. We’ve never left the kids overnight, (since Judah was born nearly 8 years ago) so this was a big first for us!

Michael purchased tickets to a local production of Oklahoma! at the Gerding Theatre at the Armory for Friday night. (Heads up, you get a hefty discount for being under 30 – good thing we didn’t wait too long to celebrate our anniversary. Another few months would’ve bumped the price up significantly!) We enjoyed the show – yes, even Michael. He did say that it was a “silly show” and of course, it really is, but that didn’t keep us from laughing most of the way through

We ate out for dinner and dessert, spent the night at the Benson Hotel, and after breakfast at an Irish pub, we quite enjoyed a tour of downtown Portland lead by a local guide. There were three other women in the tour group besides us – I thought it was odd to spend two and a half hours of my life with these people whom I will never see again. You almost got to feeling like you knew them and then it was, “Goodbye and have a nice life!” They were all from out of town – we were the only true locals participating. We both learned a lot about the city, and I feel more enthused about Portland, merely from being better acquainted with its past. For instance, did you know that Portland is called the Rose City because during World War I, the English were afraid their gardens would be destroyed and their special varieties of roses destroyed forever? Obviously they needed a sanctuary! So they looked all over the world for the proper place to relocate some of their prized flowers – and the city with the best climate turned out to be… well, the answer is obvious.

Below is a picture taken on the tour, in front of a statue called, “Allow Me” in Pioneer Square. The guide said she thought it was a lousy representation of Portland (though not necessarily a lousy piece of art) because the man you can’t really see in the picture below, is wearing a three piece suit (which is very unusual in Portland) and carrying an umbrella (also unlikely). It rains a lot here, but most of that is drizzle… hardly worth getting out an umbrella. (But umbrellas can be such cute fashion accessories these days!)

Where were the kids? At home with my parents and sister! Hooray! They all did OK, though Phinehas had a hard time going to bed and down for his nap. My parents did OK, too, though they were pretty tired by the time we got home! Thanks Mom and Dad (and Katy!)!

We really had a lovely time, and we’re hoping to do it again someday – maybe in less than 8 years this time!

Hope you all had a blessed Lord’s Day as well. We went to church, as usual. Today Michael substituted for an absent Sunday School teacher – so he got to teach Judah’s class full of 6- and 7-year-olds. I asked Judah how Dad did, and he said he did “fine.” He was less than enthusiastic because his normal teacher has recently started rewarding children who do not speak out of turn with 3 candies at the end of the class. They lose one for each time they break the rule. Apparently his dad just gave them all one piece of candy. He also noted some differences in procedure, as in which order they recited verses, did the lesson, etc. I guess they’ll be happy to have their regular teacher back next week!

After church we spent the afternoon at the new house of some friends of ours. While we were there I allowed Judah to try to cut up an apple with a paring knife. He was having trouble, so I took over, but he was telling my friend about how we had a “nifty” apple corer/slicer at home, which I thought was amusing. Since the house and furniture were new, we breathed a sigh of relief when we managed to leave without our little troop damaging or destroying anything! They did enjoy playing outside and got their shoes all caked with mud, but dutifully took them off before coming inside. Funny to see my little girl in a pink dress, and pigtails with pink ribbons running around carrying a football in the backyard!

After our busy birthday party Sunday last week my friend Mystie and her 4 kids came and visited us for a couple of days. We went to the Children’s Museum in Portland on Tuesday with all 8 kids. They all had a great time. We were commenting on how sterile the environment was though: cool miniature backhoes and dump trucks, but instead of dirt, chunks of rubber. A grocery store where they can pretend to shop for and checkout groceries – instead of going grocery shopping with their mom. A room full of legos – fun, but if you have legos at home, not extraordinarily unusual. It was fun, a good change of scene, something to do – but we realized that we have access to the real versions of most of those things in our daily lives: dirt, groceries, dolls, water, legos, dress-up. The water playroom was really clever – all of the tubs and basins, and pumps and other equipment would be difficult to replicate at home, I’ll admit. Phinehas liked that one best of all!

Mystie and I drank a lot of coffee and served a lot of food. I think we ran the dishwasher after nearly every meal! 10 people makes a lot of dishes!! (Michael’s been working late for the October 15th tax deadline) The kids didn’t get to sleep very quickly either night, and we didn’t go to bed too early ourselves, so I think we were all pretty exhausted (but happy) by the time Mystie left on Wednesday. Thursday was mostly a recovery day. With Ezra’s friend’s over for his birthday last Saturday, we had had friends over at our house to play for 5 days in a row by Wednesday!

Since I’m on the bread group at our church, I bring 50 servings of home made bread to our weekly church potluck. I’m on bread one month, regular food the next, and on bread months, I tend to spend a lot of time baking! Yesterday I baked focaccia bread with kalamata olives, and cheese muffins, and french bread with egg-whites, and pizza (for dinner). My hands are all dried out after dealing with dough all day long! I love baking though – it’s such a rewarding hobby. It’s relatively cheap, makes the house smell good, my people are excited to eat the fruits of my labor, I seldom have to worry about finding a place for it, and I just love working with dough. What’s not to like?!

This week has no major events scheduled. We get back to school (last week was our break week) tomorrow. Other than that, it’s just regularly scheduled activities. Hopefully I’ll make pesto with my abundant basil (before it freezes) and of course, there will be lots more bread baking! Have a good week!

On his actual birthday, he went out for his early birthday breakfast with his dad. They discuss goals. He received his Spiderman suit from Grandma Rachel in the mail that day, so I let him open it right away. On Saturday, he had a friend, Paul, and his uncle Zane over for the late afternoon and evening. They played dress up, battles, watched Pink Panther, and consumed Ezra’s requested birthday dinner: Eggs with sausages. I threw in some chocolate cake muffins, to make it more festive. Zane spent the night. After church on Sunday, the rest of our local family, plus a couple almost-family-members came to his “family birthday party” when he finally got most of his presents, and continued to play all afternoon with Judah and Zane. Below you see him opening presents, his colorful yellow cake with yellow frosting, candy encrusted, made by Aunt Abigail, and him blowing out his candles. We had to do the singing and cake carrying twice, because the fan was on the first time and blew out the candles before Michael could get it to the table for Ezra to blow them out!

Step Two: Give children the handtowels and basin of soapy water and instruct them to wipe down the whole floor. *

Step Three: When the floor is totally wet and pretty clean, give kids the bath towels to dry up the floor.

Step Four: Visually check floor, get any missed spots, then pour water down the drain and throw towels in the laundry room.

Step Five: Enjoy your non-sticky floor!

*Tip: I have heard people sell floor mopping as an imitation of Disney princesses Cinderella and Snow-White, but I haven’t much bothered with that. I have mostly boys, and they seem to really enjoy this process anyway.

This last week was blissfully uneventful: after the plumber came on Monday and unclogged the downstairs toilet and shower. Praise God for plumbers. And working indoor plumbing!

Judah had a soccer game out in Hubbard on Tuesday night. For those of you who don’t know where Hubbard is – well, I’m not precisely sure, either, but it’s way the heck out there, somewhere in the vicinity of Woodburn, OR. Google it. The game was good – probably a loss, but at least a close one, unlike the slaughter we endured at the previous game. While I may gripe and complain about the difficulties of working around a soccer schedule, and the business of life with children’s activities, it’s not all bad. On Tuesday I was just delighted to spend a beautiful evening out of doors, with my favorite people, watching my son’s soccer prowess. It came to me then that this could actually be considered a fun activity – after all, it is called a “game” right? And people actually pay to go see games of all sorts, right? And what better games to watch than ones in which my own people are playing?! Much preferable to a televised sports event, to my mind. It helps that soccer is the one game that I actually understand to the point that I can actually enjoy watching it, rather feeling befuddled the entire time. Thank you, Ben, Sam, and Katy for providing me with opportunities to gain this now-valuable knowledge!

It’s looking like we are going to need to replace our deck. We’ve been told that it is “structurally unsound,” and a guy came to look at it this last week to give us a quote. He sent a quote, but not an explanation, and we’re waiting for him to call to find out what exactly he is proposing. Apparently the span on the carport part of the deck is too long for the amount of support the posts provide. We might end up with rebuilding just the part of the deck that is not over the carport, and no longer having stairs from the deck into the backyard, which would actually be fine with me, because then I could continue to use a deck as a very large outdoor playpen, without the danger of having steep stairs on one end for the toddlers to fall down.

Did I mention that the boys are taking karate? It’s an “all the bells and whistles” sort of karate school: for instance, the kids keep track of their activities (such as brushing their teeth, picking up their room, setting the table) on a blue activity sheet then turn it in for a blue star to go on their badges on their karate uniform shirts. At the end of the class, the teacher calls them forward, congratulates them on their achievement, they do some shouting: “Thank you, Sir!” and “ATA!” and “Dismissed!” and run back to their places bursting with pride. They’re just eating it up. And they’re motivated to make their beds and find other chores to do to put on their sheet, so I guess it’s a good thing. I considered briefly giving them stars to motivate them in their other chores or in home schooling, but I think that much of the charm comes from the public acknowledgement from somebody other than their mother. I could sew badges on all of their clothes and then when they accomplish a major task, (memorizing a passage from the Bible, for instance) I could glue stars on the badges… or not. Maybe stickers, on charts?

Church was good today, and afterwards we had an older couple over for the afternoon. I made a pork loin roast for the main dish, with a couple of salads, and cranberry cream cheese bars for dessert. Must remember to use this menu again – it was actually pretty easy to put together – no running-around-like-a-chicken-with-head-cut-off as is my usual state when trying to exercise hospitality and prepare food for extra people.

This week we have a full schedule of activities with a baby shower at my place on Tuesday, and Ezra’s birthday on Wednesday, a couple of his friends over on Saturday, and a big family birthday party on Sunday. In the midst of school, soccer, and karate. Wish me luck!

But I make no promises….

To my surprise, I have become a “soccer mom.” By which I really mean a karate AND soccer AND piano AND t-ball mom. I’m not surprised as in, “Oh, look, my child is signed up for soccer!” surprised, more like a “how did this happen to me, I always swore I wouldn’t be one of THOSE moms who are always driving their kids around from thing to thing” surprised. But the truth is that these things kind of sneak up on you, and the only alternative to doing them is: not doing them. Which comes with its own boatload of guilt and potential ramifications. And since both my husband and I think that sports and music are good for our kids, here we are.

Judah is doing his third soccer season, which involves at least one practice and one game a week, and both of the older boys are doing karate two nights a week for a three month trial at a local karate school. I don’t think that we will continue their enrollment after the three months are up, though, so this is really just a temporary season of activity business. Judah has been doing piano with his Aunt Rosanne since she lived at our house, so that’s not a new thing: and in fact, I really shouldn’t even include it because my mother-in-law comes and picks him up and takes him to the lesson and back again, so my part is only in making sure that he practices daily and hopefully coaching him during practice once or twice a week. Since Ezra did t-ball earlier this year, and since having both of the boys in soccer at the same time was a real hassle last year, he’s sitting this season out. I’m trying to do piano with Ezra myself starting with the Primer A in the Alfred’s piano series, but I have yet to be consistent about sitting down with him to do it. Needless to say, we haven’t made much progress, although he really likes it when we do get around to it. Something else I need to stay on top of. *sigh*

Speaking of staying on top of things, I have been attempting to use the 31 Days to Clean ebook to help me get the house a little more under control. With Phinehas finally sleeping through the night, more or less, and my older kids getting older, I feel like this is finally a good time to really focus on getting the house in order. The program in the ebook is that you do one thought exercise like, “Why do you want a clean house?” (A “Mary Challenge”) and one actual housekeeping task like, “Clean out the refrigerator and freezer” (A “Martha Challenge”) every day. The first three days or so were fine: I got the refrigerator cleaned, the top of my cupboards in the kitchen dusted and decluttered and also my kitchen window washed and decluttered, and I was feeling really good about my progress. Then I hit “Clean out your kitchen cupboards.” What?! In one day?! I’ve been on that “Day” all last week and have gotten three of my 7 cupboards cleaned out. Wheeee. I’m hoping to at least get through the rest of them, and maybe my kitchen drawers this next week. But I’ve discovered that the price you pay for getting a major deep cleaning project done (especially in one day) is that dishes pile up on the counter and dinner tends to be late, and getting to evening activities becomes hugely more stressful. To sum it up: it feels good, but it comes at a price. Still, I remain optimistic.

On the third Sunday of the month, our church has parish meetings: congregants are assigned to parish groups based on their location, and they get together once a month to have a prayer meeting, and to take care of parish business. The idea is that a parish takes care of its own: providing meals for new moms, coordinating baby showers, moving assistance, and other things like that. Anyway, the meeting was at our house today, so we spent some time yesterday cleaning and tidying for the meeting. It all looked pretty good, but, life being what it was, today was the day that the toilet and shower downstairs started backing up when flushed. Again, *sigh.* The problem seemed like it was taken care of this morning, but started insidiously creeping back up during the parish meeting. The plumber is coming tomorrow at 8. Yay!!! Plumbers are like anesthesiologists: you don’t think about them much, ordinarily, but when you do see them, you feel like you’ve never been happier to see someone in your entire life.

To report a small success: I have a pot out on the deck full of healthy looking tall basil plants! Hooray! Possibly my most successful gardening venture, ever! I’m hoping to use most of it to make a batch of pesto. My sister-in-law made some with sunflower seeds rather than pine nuts, and I’m thinking of imitating her, because pine nuts are currently around $20 a pound(!!) at Winco. This would be an excellent example of a “substitute good” for an economics class. Another one would be substituting Dubliner cheese for Parmesan. Parmesan was around $12 a pound, last I checked, at Costco, and Dubliner was closer to $5. So when the sample lady said it could be used instead of Parmesan, I grabbed it up. A favorite saying of my mom’s is that sometimes you don’t need the best option, any one of several will work.

Also, we have disconnected out home phone line for the present and currently have only cell phones. If you don’t have my cell phone number (actually a google number), feel free to send me an email and I will give it to you. We’ve had cell phones for over half a year now, so I’m not sure who has the number and who doesn’t anymore.

Have a good week!

Yes, we went to Sun river for 4 nights last week with my in-laws, and my husband’s brothers (one 20, one 7). We had a splendid time! The weather was perfect, we stayed for just the right amount of time, the kids all had a ball, and it was even pretty refreshing for me, as I spent a lot of time just sitting around, reading or visiting with my mother-in-law while the kids went off to the pool or the park with their dad, grandpa and uncle/brother, Sam and his friend who came along for the trip. Phinehas didn’t sleep through the night, ever, but he didn’t wake up too much and was so worn out from the excitement that he generally went to bed easily and took two naps a day.

Sunriver is a very odd place, I thought, being dry on the ground, like I’m used to from my upbringing in Eastern Washington, and yet having a lot of pine trees, as well. So it’s hot and dry, but you can’t see very far. And all of the houses blend into the background, since they are all the color of the dirt – it’s very confusing to drive around. But a delightful place to vacation, so here’s to variety in terrain and vacations with relatives!

It was an unmitigated success, probably the best chicken I have ever made. Given that I’ve been trying to roast chickens for 10 years, that’s more of a statement of ineptitude, but we will overlook that fact for a moment.

You start out with a chicken (or in this case, two), and a can of beer (or in this case, two).

You need a half can of beer. What you do with the other half of the beer is up to you.

After removing the innards and rubbing all parts of the chicken with spices and oil, you mount the chicken on the half empty beer can.

You barbecue it for an hour+ until it looks all toasted and brown like this and is done by whichever standards of chicken doneness you use. I have a charcoal grill, so I put all of the coals on one side of the barbecue and put the chickens on the other side – indirect heat, maybe? You cook it covered: it’s basically like an oven.

Your children are excited.

The meat was tender and juicy and the skin was delightful – if you like skin. I do. Judah does. Michael doesn’t.

And we gobbled it all up.

The End. (Of the chicken)
