Increased Vocabulary

Ezra’s really discovered his voice lately. Although he has an adequate (to him) vocabulary, generally communicating clearly anything truly\’c3\’82\’c2\~necessary (hunger, thirsty, “mine!” ), he has until recently shown no interest in saying anything new just because he can. But this has changed and now he repeats lots of words, especially when we’re reading to him and identifying objects in pictures. Yesterday he said “bummy” (bunny), and “plane,” for the first time while I was reading to him. Today he\’c3\’82\’c2\~clearly said “apple” when pointing at the nectarines in the bowl that he desired. I explained that they weren’t apples, they were nectarines and now he describes them as “mumble-mumble-rine.” He says car, kitty, ducky, mine, no, me, mommy, daddy, Judah, KD, Bampa, Mamama (for grandma), and a host of other words. Sometimes I can identify what he’s saying only because he’s repeating Judah in tone, as when Judah said “Why?!!” in a particularly whiny voice and Ezra repeated him… the word was indeciferable, but the tone was unmistakable! It’s fun to see him attempting to communicate more clearly! Judah didn’t really start talking until he was two and 2 of 3 months old, so I wasn’t expecting Ezra to talk much sooner than that… and so far, he’s right on that track and possibly a little ahead, as his second birthday is at the end of September.\par

Judah also seems to be talking even more these days. He already talks a lot, but he’s attempting to explain/illustrate things to us verbally more than he used to. Last night he treated us to a long disertation about the view from Michael’s office window. He was trying to use his fingers and his cup to explain about the skybridge seen from that window. He’ll frequently bring up things from quite a long time ago – like making “snow icecream” with syrup on it during our one winter storm this last winter or staying at the beachhouse at Family Camp. There isn’t really any point to saying this other than to say that he’s growing up so fast and starting to talk like a normal child, rather than a toddler. It’s exciting.
