Apparently tomatoes are hardier than I thought. Michael called me yesterday and told me that there appeared to be tomatoes growing in the gravel “enclosure” next to the deck. He hadn’t pulled them up earlier in the year because they looked and smelled like tomato plants, but I didn’t see them at all until yesterday. Yes, indeed, there are at least 2 large fruit-bearing tomato plants growing out of the gravel in the enclosure – unwatered, unfertilized, and unplanted. Apparently someone (possibly me) threw the rotten or blighted tomatoes over the edge of the deck last year, where they somehow found some soil. I don’t remember ever hearing of tomatoes coming up volunteer! I’m rather excited about it!\par

Also, on my way back from the discovery I picked some ripe tomatoes off of my cultivated tomato plants to take them upstairs. I let Ezra hold one, and he immediately took a big bite out of it. I thought sure he’d spit it out as he has so far been unfriendly toward tomatoes, but he just continued to eat it. I put him in his highchair and he ate a good half of it – grinning from ear to ear when he discovered that it made a wonderful squelching noise when squeezed really hard.

Ah, true joy is found in a vine-ripened tomato! Doesn’t get better than that.
