Sewing again!

I bought a sewing machine! It’s a used Viking mechanical machine. I’ve been shopping for one for a while now – mostly by reading about them online. There are so many sewing machines though that it was quite an overwhelming project. Alice emailed me a site with reviews of sewing machines, which had lots of reviews of tons of sewing machines, which was quite a find, but even that didn’t help too much, since the reviews were pretty much all recommendations and there were literally hundreds of models reviewed. So, I went to Montevilla sewing center off Stark in Portland. I had expected a walmart of sewing machines – floor to ceiling, wall to wall, but instead there were probably less than 50 in the room, and only about 5 in my price range – the cheaper ones were too simple, and there were only 3 real options. So, of those options, it was easy to choose. I got a used Viking Daisy that was only about 3 years old (although I forgot to ask). The other two options were Pfaff machines, but they the generically made ones (made in China or Taiwan, not Germany) and felt less solid than the Swedish made Viking. How important that is, I really don’t know, but there it is.\par

I think I could’ve gotten a machine with more features for the same price online (like one-step buttonhole), but I wouldn’t have been able to try them out before I bought, and they don’t come with the one-year in-store warranty, so I think I’m satisfied… now all I have to do is learn how to use a new machine. (ha, ha, ha)

I think you’ve made a good choice with the Viking, Elly. It should be a good, reliable machine for a very long time or until you want to trade up. And I like the fact that you have a local dealer that you can go to with questions, problems, repairs, and probably lots of classes too.\par

At the Martha Pullen sewing school here in Pasco last year, we all got to sew on the Viking Designer SE – a wonderful machine, but can’t quite understand the price tag! I’d have to be sewing full time to justify an expense like that, lol!
