Wives and Daughters

I watched an A&E Miniseries called Elizabeth Gaskell’s: Wives and Daughters over this last weekend that I really enjoyed. The auther was a little younger than Jane Austen and wrote it more toward the Civil War Era (although it’s set in England). It’s somewhat like Jane Austen, but a little bit broader in scope, dealing with such mundane things as tradespeople, doctors, personal finances, and draining land for the next generation. The story line reminded me of something between Persuasion and Mansfield Park. Anyway, if you like Pride and Prejudice, you’d probably like Wives and Daughters.\par

Also, last week I watched Maid in Manhattan about a hotel maid who does a Cinderella and ends up with a wealthy candidate for Senate. It stars Jennifer Lopez, who I like to watch, but the story line was a little.. oh, lifeless. Good for a girls night when you don’t really want to think much, but not exactly a lasting tribute to anything.
