We went and visited my grandmother today, since we’ll be out of town next week, so she won’t get her Wednesday visit from us, like she usually does. The visit went well and Grandma was very happy to see us as usual. It’s so sad to see her vitality starting to fade. Her mind works slower and slower and her physical abilities just keep declining. But she still doesn’t do what she’s told – that’ll be her motto: “stubborn to the end!”
I think the ladies who care for her enjoy her though – even though I’m positive that there’s a lot of frustration. But it sounds like they keep up a generally cheerful and friendly dialogue wth her and that there’s some sincere affection, which in some ways is more than you could ask for.\par

While we were there the caretaker told me that the other girl in the office was off looking for one of the residents. Apparently there had been reports of a naked man running about the building, and a trail of clothes had been found.\par

Also, while we were in Grandma’s room and the caretaker was helping her in the restroom, the lady next door kept hollering at the top of her lungs. Brandy, the caretaker, had to keep going next door to try to calm her down. Apparently Leah, grandma’s next door neighbor, can’t be helped out of bed by less than two people becuase she can’t bear her own weight – and because she pinches and pokes the people helping her.\par

Three cheers for the people in the elder care industry – may God bless them for their service and keep them sane!!

My 85-year-old mom is in an assisted living facility nearby. The caregivers there are amazing….their patience with my dementia-addled, nearly blind and quite hard-of-hearing mother is unlimited. I try to thank them often and let them know how I appreciate the way they take care of her.
