Winnie the Pooh..

That’s the refrain going on next to me on the TV. I have to say, I always had a strong affection for Winnie the Pooh and am glad that Judah wanted to watch it this afternoon while I finished up the cards and gifts for the graduation this evening. Yes, I made cards for the graduation. Hopefully they will think of it in the right way “someone spent at least 10 minutes making this for me – hooray!” rather than the alternative “boy, I wish they’d gone out and bought me a card so that I could keep it for a few months then throw it away.” That’s what I’m hoping. Card making is not my craft-of-choice (what is?) but when faced with 6 graduates (including my wonderful sister-in-law, Angela) the thought of trying to pick out individual cards for each of them based on what I know of them (very little for most) or buying a box of identical graduation cards that say something sappy or boring was not appealing. Making my own seemed at least equally reasonable, right? Obviously, I feel slightly guilty about this or I wouldn’t spend all of this time justifying it to myself. Guilt complexes are terrible, you know?\par

However, I also thought my protracted effort at a creative endeavor gave me the right to take a break and put something new on my blog. I haven’t written anything about the boys for a while, it seems and the world at large needs an update!\par

Ezra is still a delightfully chubby, cheerful, little chap but he is suffering through a hard time right now – for the past couple of days he has been drooling, continually smearing at a runny nose and red eyes, and also getting an occasional diaper rash. He’s got one tooth that has already broken though, but I’m guessing that there’s a second one on it’s way up, poor guy. Somebody told Michael that the pain involved in teething is the kind of pain that adults would usually use narcotics for. But I don’t know how they could say that – since they can’t talk, and how do you rate pain anyway? I don’t know, anyway, I feel sorry for the poor guy.\’c3\’82\’c2\~ He definitely feels better after a dose of tylenol though, and this makes him sleep well, too! Other than that he’s growing up so quickly – he rolls all over the floor and even tries to get up on his hand and knees although that particular maneuver tends to make him scoot backwards rather than forwards. He still scoots around on his behind by rocking back and forth, which carries him a surprisingly long way!\par

Judah has been continuing in his potty training. Unfortunately it seems to be a good week/bad week process. Last week he failed to use the potty for a No. 2 for 4-5 days in a row. For no apparent reason however, this last Tuesday he just ran off and did his business with no prompting – quite as if that was his normal mode of operation. He’s been doing pretty well for the rest of this week! Also, he has apparently decided that the little potty adds a lot of excess fuss and bother so he’s started to use the big potty, again without any prompting on my part. I have to say that it is a rather impressive athletic feat for somebody that short to get on the toilet!\par

Talking with Judah has sometimes been a frustrating process, especially when I was attempting to get the desired answer out of him. Example: “Judah, Mommy does NOT want you to play with the cards that come in a box. Judah which cards are you NOT supposed to play with?” Answer “supposed to play,” or some other repeated or made up gibberish. Recently however he has shown signs of truly listening and processing what I’m saying. He even remembers the correct answer from one session to the other “Judah, where are you supposed to go tinkle?” “Tinkle Poppy–Not Pants, Dry Pants!!” We’re making progress! He remembers that we’re reading Proverbs in devotions in the evening and Michael has been trying to teach him the answer to “what’s the most important thing – better than gold, better than silver, better than fruit, better than jelly beans?” the answer is supposed to be “wisdom,” but he has yet to remember that at the beginning of Devotions. And if you mention Jelly Beans you’ve guaranteed that he will be able to think of nothing else the rest of the session.\par

Now I’ll finish this up and then post some pictures!

  • Hm…instead of watching a movie, my boys are tearing old magazines (with permission) and making a big mess and poking each other and “helping” each other and squeeling and narrating (each respectively) while I look over my email and blogs…hmmm…this not unpacking the tv does have drawbacks! :) \par

I only recently have tried a few times to get Hans to repeat back to me what he is or is not supposed to do after I’ve told him. Even though I know he listened and understood he can’t always formulate what he should say or understand what I want him to say. So, I either tell him exactly what to say, “Hans, say, ‘Do not open the front door.’” Although a few times I’ve overheard him five minutes later reprimanding Jaeger and commanding him not to do whatever it was he got in trouble for. :) I still can’t get a consistant “Yes, Ma’am” as a response (and that’s not lack of ability!).\par

What do you do for Judah to wash his hands afterwards? Does your stepstool bring him high enough? Ours isn’t big enough, and I have to hold him up with one arm and squeeze a drop of soap with the other, and orchestrate his hands to make sure all the soap gets off….it makes me dread the bathroom trip just thinking about it! :)

  • Don’t feel guilty about the cards. I just considerded that I should be bringing them something about 1/2 hour ago! You’re doing great!\par
Nice pics – Is that Oregon City sourdough that I saw?! How did it taste?! I’m sure it was great!

Enjoyed your update and the pics, Elly! Your bread looks wonderful. Have you been trying new strains of sourdough?

Mystie – we have two little plastic chairs that stack on top of each other. Judah can lift and move them easily and I keep them right next to the counter on top of the scale. When stacked they bring Judah high enough to wash his own hands, although I like to supervise to make sure that there isn’t a soap extravaganza! But it took me a while before I thought of using the chairs and then, yes, the whole little pot into the big pot, then wash hands ritual was the most dreaded part. \par
Alice and Von – Yes! That’s Oregon City sourdough – with the starter grown right here in Oregon City using whole wheat bread flour and water. Still working out the bugs though – the crust is really tough – too tough. I wanted to program a recipe into the bread maker that allows me to let it rise in the bread maker for 4 hours, then punches it down, let’s it rise for another 4 hours (it’s a pretty healthy starter!) then bake it – but the programmed settings won’t allow a rise of any longer than 100 minutes! It’s a fun and fulfilling experiment, although I’m running through flour like you wouldn’t believe.
