I went through the pile of papers on my counter this afternoon, which included at least 6 invitations to graduations and weddings. When I was done I had a large pile of envelopes, second envelopes and those little tissue paper inserts people stick into their invitations. No offense to anybody reading this whose invitation made up part of that pile but – WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THE LITTLE TISSUE PAPER INSERTS?!!! Obviously, people use them because they are traditional. Does anybody even know what they are for? It seems to me I remember hearing that they were for keeping the ink from smearing or something, which I can only conclude comes from the days of earlier technology when ink on printed invitations actually smeared. I’ve never seen so much as a spot on the tissue papers! Unless I’m missing some highly important function that they are performing, I have to say that to me, it seems like an obsolete component that probably could go the way of the mammoth without being missed. When do we finally chuck outdated manners/customs?

  • You know, I was thinking the same thing as I was opening all those graduation and wedding invitations. How funny. :)

  • I think we got by just fine without those tissue paper inserts – we had enough stuff to stick in the envelopes – between the maps for out-of-towners, reply cards, engagement pictures, etc. …
