The instructions on the box of rice cereal I bought for Ezra clearly state that one should discard the “unused portion” of the bowl when finished with a meal. Does anybody know what possible harm could come from wrapping some plastic wrap over the bowl and putting it into the refrigerator until the next meal? I’m not saying one should let it sit out for hours and then reuse it or anything, just refrigerate it and finish the bowl a few hours later. To me it seems like a rather shameless attempt to sell more rice cereal!!!

Ellie, it would probably be fine if refrigerated promptly. I imagine the warning has something to do with bacteria or other little bugs that are transferred to the cereal from the baby’s mouth while feeding that could possibly affect the cereal, and thus the child, if not handled properly. Probably the best strategy is to make up smaller portions so there are no leftovers. Maybe someone else has more info on the matter, or a differing opinion.
My answer? Don’t read the box.
I didn’t even know it said that, and I have blithely been wrapping up my applesauce-rice-cereal mix in the fridge overnight to be used the next day. \par

I think baby-product makers are just extra careful to cover their liability, because people without common sense can have babies and will want to blame anyone else they can when something bad happens to their baby.
I always reused mine too.\par

Nobody has died yet.
Good to hear from y’all.
I’ve always reused my babyfood – with Judah I actually made my own rice cereal with rice and a food processor – so I definitely wasn’t going to toss the unused portion, just like that. I actually bought the boxed stuff this time – and boy is it easier. I think Mystie’s right though – they always pander to the lowest common denominator. It’s like heating bottles up in the microwave (I’m out on a limb here, I know), but the argument goes – “don’t heat your baby bottles in the microwave, because a microwave heats unevenly and some of the milk might be scalding hot and hurt the baby.” Yes, I can see that. But… why not just shake the bottle VERY thoroughly before you TEST it and then give it to the baby? (I don’t really use bottles much anyway) Maybe there’s a good reason, I’m just saying I don’t quite get that.
I agree, LE. I’ve reused Sam’s cereal on several occasions and nothing bad has happened yet.

I didn’t realize that you could make rice cereal, too! I’ve been doing the whole baby-food-ice-cube-tray thing, so am always looking for ideas for other stuff.
